About our consultant
Billy Alcordo is a 3rd generation piano tuner and also a piano technician. Back in the Philippines, in the city of Davao, the Alcordo family owned and operated a piano re-building business. His grandfather, Rogaciano Alcordo Sr. worked at Robinson’s Piano factory in Manila, after the Second World War. It was where he learned the piano servicing trade. After he gained all the knowledge he needed to open a shop of his own, he then migrated to Davao City where he founded and operated the family business, Alcordo & Sons.
The Piano Tuner Method
Our piano technician tunes the piano using traditional methods. That is the “Aural Method”. Also called “Tuning by Ear”. While all other piano tuners in Thailand use a digital tuning meter, Pro Piano Tuner tunes the piano by ear. Pro Piano Tuner does not use any digital tuning device.
The “Aural Method” is certainly considered the best method of piano tuning. Because it is purely based on the listening skills of the piano tuner. And also on his ability to effectively tune a piano depending on the piano’s location.
How to choose your piano tuner
There are things that a piano tuner should take into consideration when tuning a piano. For example, the location of the piano, the acoustics of the venue, and the harmonics are to be considered. A piano tuner with good listening skills can also detect these things. Whereas, a digital piano tuning meter might not. Therefore, a good piano tuner must have good hearing and listening skills. He must also have the proper piano tuning technique. Otherwise, he might just be doing more harm than good to your piano. So, you have to choose your piano tuner well.
We hope that the information that we provided above can be useful to you. And can also help you in choosing your piano tuner. We also welcome any questions and inquiries you may have on this subject and are always ready to give you the best answers according to our experience. So please, do not hesitate to contact us.
Pro Piano Tuner answers the most popular questions about piano services from our clients
How much time does it take to tune a piano?
A proper piano tuning will not take less than one and a half hours. However, it could also take up to three hours at most.
How often should I tune my piano?
You have to consider some variables in order to determine how often you need to have your piano tuned. The condition of your piano, the workload (how often it is played), and the weather changes that your piano is exposed to are some of those variables.
- If your piano is a house piano “a piano in your home that is played regularly”, and is still in good condition, it is recommended that you have your piano tuned every 4 – 6 months at the least to avoid unchecked advanced wear and tear and to make sure that your piano is always in good condition and is in standard tuning all the time.
- If your piano is a commercial piano “a piano used commercially as a hotel, or bar piano”, which is used and played every day and has a heavier workload, it is recommended that you have your piano tuned and serviced every 2 – 3 months.
What to do before selling/buying a second-hand piano?
Have your piano serviced and tuned by an independent professional piano technician before selling/buying a second-hand piano. This way, you can have an unbiased assessment of the actual condition of the piano. Having the piano serviced and tuned before selling/buying puts the piano in its best condition. You can then appraise the selling/buying price depending on the best condition of the used or second-hand piano.
